About 17 months ago — after more than 7 years of weighing the pros and cons of the long-term commitment and responsibilities that come with having a dog — I adopted a 9-year-old rescue hound mix. I knew I wanted an older, mature, gentle dog. I envisioned long walks exploring neighborhoods and local trails and a traveling companion on road trips.
