Let’s Talk About Sect: Day & Night Charts in Astrology

One fundamental principle in traditional astrology is knowing whether you were born during the day or the night. In astrology, this is called “sect.” Judging whether you have a day chart or a night chart is more than just knowing the time of day you were born. It is figuring out whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at the moment of birth. Some times are obvious, like noon or midnight. But others can be fuzzy — for example, 4:52 p.m. in Seattle, could be a day chart most of the time, but a night chart for a few days in November or January (depending on daylight savings time). Note that the birth time, daylight savings time, season, and latitude of birth location affect how sect is calculated. The sect doctrine is important for several reasons, because it:

  • stipulates which planets are more infortunate and fortunate in your chart

  • determines whether the Sun or Moon guides your life path

  • asserts priority order for triplicity lords

  • is foundational for calculating the lots

  • establishes planetary order for certain timing techniques, like Firdaria and Zodiacal Releasing.
